Bird Key

History

In the early 1900s, Bird Key was a small, unoccupied island that elevated just several feet above surrounding grass flats in Sarasota Bay. The first development in the island started in 1911 after Thomas Martin Worcester dredged a channel through the island towards his dock and made use of the dredged material in order to increase the land’s elevation.

In 1959, Arvida Realty, Inc. purchased holdings on Bird Key from its previous developer, Ringling Interests. Arvida positioned the key as a luxury residential area in Sarasota, highlighting its underground electric utility system, a unique feature that was ahead of its time.
